Hello Local 596 and welcome to the new year! We hope you had a wonderful holiday and are feeling refreshed and ready to meet the opportunities of the future for our Local.

We look forward to the upcoming election with the newly adopted reforms which we advocated for, including polling booths at multiple stations and registered candidate names on the ballots. This improves accessibility and inclusivity of our elections for members with disabilities who are not able to move to different buildings due to construction and weather or members who need to go back to their jobs right away due to the nature of their work.

Please remember that Nominations for Officer Positions will be accepted starting this Friday, January 17th, 2020 and will close at 5pm on Friday, January 24th, 2020. Nomination forms are available from your local executive. Any previous nominations must be re-submitted.

Election day is on Tuesday, January 28, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and three (3) polling stations will be open. (ADD a reminder to your calendar)

The polling station locations are to be determined but are tentatively set for:

Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM)Rogers Communications Centre (RCC)POD 250

Candidates are required to achieve a clear majority (50% plus one of votes cast) to be declared as elected. If required, run-off elections for any Officer positions will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2020.

OPSEU HQ staff will be in attendance at each polling station to register voting members. You will be required to show identification such as Employer identification (Ryerson oneCard) or OPSEU Union card. Any members who are listed as “unsigned/non-member” will be required to complete and submit to the staff an OPSEU Membership application prior to being provided with their ballots.

In other news, we feel it’s important to extend our deepest sympathies to the families of victims of the plane crash in Iran and to everyone who has suffered loss in this terrible tragedy. Events of this nature can be difficult and upsetting for our community and people may need to gather or seek counselling and health services which are available on campus. Employees seeking counselling should access the employee and family assistance program for resources and counselling. At difficult times like these, we encourage all Ryerson community members to turn to one another for comfort and support. Please get in touch with any questions or concerns and we will aim to keep everyone informed to the best of our abilities in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support, The Grow Strong Through Change Team.
