Good morning OPSEU Local 596 members!
My name is Deborah Jesus and I’m running for Recording Secretary. I am a Marketing and Communications professional with a master’s degree in Communication and New Media from McMaster University. I work in the Legal Innovation Zone as a Marketing and Communications Coordinator and also serve as a Communications Lead at CivicAction’s Emerging Leaders Network.
I want to use my skills to empower the OPSEU community with knowledge about your rights, benefits, and what it means to be an engaged member of our union.
Strong communication between union leadership and membership is the key to a successful future. It is time to build clear, accessible, transparent, and consistent communication channels that invite participation, activate feedback, and increase involvement and impact.
To read my full bio and find out more about our campaign priorities, please look at our website and get in touch with us to let us know what you think. You can also follow the #OPSEU596 hashtag on Twitter for updates.
Now, onto some key points:
1. Our last Meet and Greet is tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at SLC508 Please click here to see a map of the location. [Add it to your calendar!]
2. We want to fight for OPSEU positions: Jobs were posted on Nov 14 for three new MAC positions in the Faculty of Science that might cost current Administrative Assistant positions (OPSEU roles). We hear that similar conversions may be starting in other faculties as well. Our fundamental job as Union leaders is to protect OPSEU jobs and it is of great concern that this basic task is not being fulfilled under the current leadership. Our team believes in fighting to preserve OPSEU jobs from the growing trend of job conversions to MAC or the use of Non-Union Casual Employees doing OPSEU work.
3. What do you need on Election Day, November 25 at 12 p.m. at Kerr Hall Upper Gym:
a) Please arrive before 12:10 p.m. Doors will be tiled after this time. Only members who have registered before this time will be able to vote.
b) Identification: Bring your One Card and any Government Issue ID. If you do not have your One Card with you, feel free to download and print your most recent pay stub (my.ryerson.ca).
c) OPSEU Membership Application Form: Please fill out the form and bring it on Election Day (if you have not done so already). We will also bring blank forms available for you to fill out.
Thank you, Deborah
